Bioinformatics Core

The IBI Bioinformatics Core provides professional bioinformatics services, including data analysis and consultation to the Penn biomedical research community. The core is also dedicated to build efficient pipelines to handle various next-generation sequencing (NGS) data, generated within our NGS core or elsewhere.

The Bioinformatics Core is also supported by IBI faculty members whose areas of expertise include NGS-related algorithm development, human disease research (diabetes, cancer, Autism, Alzheimer’s disease etc.), functional genomics, medical informatics, statistical genetics, and computational biology. We provide bioinformatics support for grant applications in all biomedical areas by drafting approaches and offering computation resources and expertise for the proposed research.

Grant Support

For all services, the core will provide an estimated of cost of the work. The PI will need to approve this estimate and provide an account number for the payment prior to the beginning of any work performed by the core. We will make every effort to stick to the initial estimate. However, in cases where the analysis needs extra effort (e.g. additional client requests, complex data management, novel application development), we will communicate with the PI as early as possible about how much extra cost will be needed to accomplish the requested service.

Free Service

Grant support with a reasonable amount of effort and the initial project meeting within an hour will be offered at no cost. Analysis of preliminary data may be billed upon agreement.

Service Rates

Hourly Fee: The hourly fee is $77 for Penn and CHOP users. The hourly fee for academic users outside Penn is $185.

Project-Based Fee: With a clear statement of the standards for the accomplishment of a project, the core will provide an estimate of total cost to the PI. Upon agreement on this estimate, there will be no extra charge to the PI until the project is completed. If the standards cannot be met because of uncontrollable factors (e.g. unsolvable technical difficulties, poor quality raw data) rather lack of necessary work, the service will be charged based on actual hours spent on the project (no more than the original estimate).

Contract Based Option: The core will dedicate certain amount of manpower and resources requested by the PI for a period of time (contract time). The total cost will solely depend on the amount of manpower and resources requested.

Data Computation Time and Storage Cost

Most large-scale data analysis needs to be performed on HPC servers of the Penn Medicine Academic Computing Services (PMACS). The clients will be responsible for extra charges from PMACS for the computation time and storage of their own data.
