Graduate Training

IBI faculty are committed to training graduate students and medical students in biomedical informatics. Many IBI faculty participate in the Genomics and Computational Biology (GCB) Graduate Group at the University of Pennsylvania. More information about this program can be found here.

IBI Pre-doctoral Collaboration Fellowships

As part of its core mission, IBI seeks to promote research collaborations between informaticians and clinical, experimental, and observational investigators. Each year we plan to award 3 one-year, renewable competitive fellowships in the amount of $15,000/year. PhD Students in year 3 are eligible to apply for support in years 4 and 5, and must be mentored by an IBI Senior Fellow. The student should be working on an informatics project in collaboration with a clinical, experimental, or observational investigator in a biological or biomedical field who is not a member of IBI.

Interested students should submit their applications to Hannah Chervitz by March 31st of their third year. The application should include the following:

  • A research proposal in NRSA format
  • The student’s CV
  • 2 letters of support, including one from the student’s thesis advisor and one from the collaborator

Fellowships will be reviewed and awarded by the IBI Executive Committee, and are renewable for a second year, pending satisfactory progress and publication record. Each year of support will begin on July 1st.
