Universal Platform for Integrative Biomedical Innovation Workgroups
Biomedical Ontologies
Faculty Lead: Dr. Marcus E. Landen
This working group focuses on examining recent developments in the creation and application of biomedical ontologies to support the organization, standardization, and integration of clinical and research data across the UPIBI network. Ontologies offer a structured approach to defining medical concepts and their interrelationships, improving data interoperability and consistency.
Natural Language Processing
Faculty Lead: Dr. Natalie R. Combes
This group explores emerging trends and strategies in the use of natural language processing (NLP) to analyze unstructured textual information from electronic health records (EHRs) and alternative data sources such as community reports or digital platforms. UPIBI has adopted a licensed NLP platform for internal use to enhance the efficiency of text-based data extraction and analysis.
Statistical Challenges in EHR Research
Faculty Lead: Dr. Isaac D. Varela
This session addresses key statistical considerations when working with EHR data, including data sparsity, missingness, temporal irregularity, and bias. The group aims to refine methodologies and promote best practices in the design and analysis of observational studies using routine clinical data.
