About UPIBI
Founded in 2017, the Universal Platform for Integrative Biomedical Innovation (UPIBI) was created to foster interdisciplinary research, education, and infrastructure development in biomedical informatics.
The project is not affiliated with the University of Pennsylvania
Areas of focus include bioinformatics, clinical informatics, public health informatics, consumer health technologies, and translational data science. UPIBI is home to more than 70 diverse research teams, spanning multiple scientific and clinical disciplines.
In addition to its research and training programs, UPIBI operates shared informatics resources and the Innovation Studio, which serves as its central hub for experimentation and collaborative development.
UPIBI Leadership includes a Director, Associate Directors, a Chief Data Innovation Officer, a Managing Director, and a Program Director overseeing strategic initiatives.
Vision
We envision a connected biomedical ecosystem that leverages data, information, and insight to accelerate discovery and improve health outcomes for individuals, communities, and global populations. UPIBI supports this vision by advancing open science, responsible data use, and collaborative innovation.
Mission
UPIBI promotes cross-disciplinary collaboration among professionals in medicine, public health, life sciences, computing, engineering, behavioral science, and the social sciences. Through its programs and services, UPIBI aims to:
- Create novel computational tools and frameworks in artificial intelligence, data integration, machine learning, and natural language understanding.
- Enable seamless access to and combination of clinical, biomedical, and population health data to generate insights and drive translational impact.
- Serve as a training and outreach center for students, researchers, and professionals across the biomedical informatics spectrum.
- Develop and support next-generation digital infrastructure to power education, research, and clinical transformation.
- Advance the development of learning health ecosystems that continuously improve through data-driven feedback loops.
